Our partner Lightbend today announced early access of an exciting new product they're calling the Fast Data Platform (FDP). Designed to address the difficulties of building applications that ingest and process data in real time (aka streaming data), FDP packages DC/OS, Kafka, Spark and the Lightbend Reactive Platform into an all-inclusive, pre-integrated streaming-data system.

DC/OS is a critical—in fact, necessary—component of FDP. It is the infrastructure foundation on top of which the remainder of the FDP components will run. This is because DC/OS is the only technology currently on the market that can run all of the necessary pieces on a single set of resources, while ensuring strict resource isolation and advanced scheduling for these complex distributed data systems. Furthermore, DC/OS makes it easy to migrate applications or services to and from the cloud as business requirements change.

We're particularly excited about FDP not only because it's a promising product from a close partner, but also because it builds on the "data agility" mission Mesosphere has been pushing since we first built DC/OS. Our goal is to make it dead simple for DC/OS users to install and run the data systems their modern applications require. We offer single-click, GUI-based installation with DC/OS Universe, as well as operational features designed to provide high levels of availability and advanced scheduling capabilities.

Here's a list of data-management systems currently available in DC/OS Universe:

  • Apache Cassandra
  • Apache Kafka
  • Apache Spark
  • Apache Storm
  • ArangoDB
  • Concord
  • Confluent Platform
  • Crate
  • DataStax Enterprise
  • Elasticsearch
  • HDFS
  • Hue
  • Kibana
  • MariaDB
  • MemSQL
  • MySQL
  • Quobyte
  • Redis
  • Riak
  • Zeppelin

Mesosphere, as well as the greater open source DC/OS community, is actively working to bring more data technologies and partners into the DC/OS Universe.

Of course, users who come to DC/OS via data-centric partner products such as FDP can also take advantage of our platform's overall feature set, which includes a mature and rapidly advancing container orchestration engine. DC/OS lets users run production environments in which Docker containers, microservices, and the stateful data systems that back them all share the same infrastructure and management experience. We recently announced general availability of Mesosphere Enterprise DC/OS 1.8, which includes a long list of new features ranging from an improved user experience to advanced container-security options.

It's an exciting time to be a developer, and we're happy to partner with companies like Lightbend to enable some truly powerful applications. During the early access period, anyone interested in Lightbend FDP can contact the company directly.
