Announcing Mesosphere for DigitalOcean

For more than five years, DC/OS has enabled some of the largest, most sophisticated enterprises in the world to achieve unparalleled levels of efficiency, reliability, and scalability from their IT infrastructure. But now it is time to pass the torch to a new generation of technology: the D2iQ Kubernetes Platform (DKP). Why? Kubernetes has now achieved a level of capability that only DC/OS could formerly provide and is now evolving and improving far faster (as is true of its supporting ecosystem). That’s why we have chosen to sunset DC/OS, with an end-of-life date of October 31, 2021. With DKP, our customers get the same benefits provided by DC/OS and more, as well as access to the most impressive pace of innovation the technology world has ever seen. This was not an easy decision to make, but we are dedicated to enabling our customers to accelerate their digital transformations, so they can increase the velocity and responsiveness of their organizations to an ever-more challenging future. And the best way to do that right now is with DKP.

Today, Mesosphere and DigitalOcean announced a partnership to bring automated provisioning of Mesosphere clusters to DigitalOcean's SSD-based cloud. With Mesosphere for DigitalOcean, developers can stand up a Mesosphere cluster on DigitalOcean's cloud and then deploy, scale and manage applications in just a few clicks.

Mesosphere is a dramatically new way of building applications on DigitalOcean. Rather than deal with individual cloud instances ("Droplets") one virtual machine at a time, Mesosphere pools all of your DigitalOcean Droplets into a single pool of resources on which you can run your applications and containers. By abstracting much of the DevOps work associated with building a Mesosphere cluster and orchestrating applications, developers can operate their apps and servers at any scale with lower overhead. They will also enjoy high levels of resiliency and resource efficiency, as applications launched on Mesosphere are automatically fault-tolerant and efficiently packed onto the cloud resources.

When you login to Mesopshere for Digital ocean, you may choose from three installation options:

  • Development: A Development cluster is "sandbox" or experimental Mesosphere cluster with 4 instances of the 2GB Droplets. A Development cluster is great for developing and testing, but will not be highly-available and fault tolerant.
  • Highly-Available: A Highly-Available Mesopshere cluster is a fault-tolerant and production-grade configuration with no single point of failure. It consists of 10 instances of the 2GB Droplets.
  • Custom: A Custom Mesosphere cluster allows you to choose the number and types of DigitalOcean Droplets so you can tailor the configuration to your specific needs.

Mesosphere for DigitalOcean is a free service that runs on top of your DigitalOcean account. You are of course responsible for any Droplets which you provision on DigitalOcean when you install Mesosphere, but you pay no additional charges for the use of the Mesosphere for DigitalOcean tool.

To start using Mesosphere for DigitalOcean, just visit https://digitalocean.mesosphere.com. Just sign in with your DigitalOcean account, pick which installation option you'd like and click launch! Within a couple of minutes, you'll be able to use Marathon, Chronos and Mesos to run applications, services, and diverse workloads side-by-side on your own Mesosphere cluster.
